If breads and sugars aren’t actually good for our bodies, why do we crave them? On this episode of Ask Shiloah, we give you the surprising answers.
Hello, ladies and gents. Welcome to this week’s Q&A with Shiloah. Now, this week you probably all are going to be able to relate to this question that Maria has asked on one level or another. To some degree or another, you probably have struggled with this at one point in your life. Stay tuned while I answer Maria’s question.
Before We Begin…Some Updates
But first things first, I want to just give you a little bit of an update as to what I’m doing with my tribe and how this affects you. From here forward, instead of just answering the question of the week on the audio, I’m actually turning it into a podcast because I know that podcasts and getting everything uploaded on iTunes is the way to go. And it’ll also help with your commute.
If you’re driving or if you’re out walking or jogging, you can just listen and download that. But that is in the works so bear with me over the next few weeks as I get all of the technology and all of the links plugged in and everything like that. In the meantime, I know it’s more important to answer your questions than it is to have perfection or professionalism behind all the workings to starting or launching a podcast. So, first thing, I am looking for a cool jingle for my new podcast and it’s going to be called the Ask Shiloah Podcast where we’ll be talking about health, happiness, hardship and hope for women. Question of the Day: Submitted By Maria
So, let’s move on to Maria’s question. Now, Maria, her question is, “I am 220 pounds and I don’t know how to stop eating bread and candies.” So, if any of you can relate to that, I know I can and sometimes I crave candies and breads more than other times. There are several things that I think are going on with Maria.
Cravings Crusher 1: Switch Your Fuel Source
First of all, when you are used to eating carbohydrates and getting your energy from sugar sources (and when I say sugar sources, I mean sources that may not look like sugar but it translates into sugar in your body. Bread, for example) Those are sugar sources. Breads and potatoes and starches and even rice. Even if it’s gluten-free, it still translates to a sugar in your body. So, when you eat the different sugar sources that give you energy, what happens is your body becomes used to that energy source and when it’s been a few hours since you have eaten a food that gives you the energy from a sugar source, then your body’s gonna crave more of it.
It’s kind of a vicious cycle. And I think that’s why the keto diet has become so popular is because the whole concept behind the keto diet is you’re shifting your metabolism and your body over to being more of a fat burner source instead of a sugar burner source.
So that’s the first thing I would definitely recommend to Maria: Switch your fuel source from a sugar fuel to a fat fuel or even a protein fuel. And that really just opens up a whole new topic of discussion, which I won’t talk about here today because I cover that really extensively at length in the Baby My Body Course.

We all respond differently to different food sources. Some of us are mixed body types where we get our best fuel from whole carbohydrates that are healthy and a combination of the proteins. Some of us, we just don’t tolerate carbs very well. So our protein source is our best fuel and others we just want a solid carbohydrate source like your healthy vegetables and the whole grains that actually do better for our fuel. So no one’s body is identical. We are so different and that’s why there are so many different diets and programs out there that work so differently for different people.
Cravings Crusher 2: Starve Off Your Yeast
Okay, now, the second thing I wanna talk to Maria about is when your body is overloaded with yeast and candida, it can be the candida that is talking, not you. And let me explain. I know this sounds a little creepy but candida is everywhere. So we all have various levels of yeast in our body but when there’s a candida overgrowth and especially this applies to women so listen very carefully, ladies, because our … just the simple fact that we have more estrogen in our bodies, that will actually feed yeast. So, Maria may have an overload of yeast that is screaming out every couple of hours saying, “Feed me! Feed me!” So the yeast is talking, not Maria. Okay?
So true story, I have a friend and we went through a course together and she was so overloaded with yeast that it was in her nose, in her ears, in her private areas. It was terrible. It was coming out in her skin and so if you have skin issues or if you’ve got itching in your private areas or you’ve got like fungus and yeast overgrowth on your toenails or if you have severe sugar cravings, it could be your yeast speaking.

We actually go on a full yeast cleanse which really it’s all about starving the yeast versus trying to attack the yeast. Because from my viewpoint, it’s easier to just withhold the food and eventually the yeast will die off on its own versus going and attack it with all sorts of remedies and herbs and protocols and you can throw as many probiotics and things at the yeast but, if you’re not starving the actual food source, then it’s kind of counterproductive. So that’s something to think about.
Cravings Crusher 3: Do Something Healthy To Improve Your Mood
Now, the last thing, the third and last thing I wanna tell Maria is that sugar acts as a mood enhancer. There have been studies that have shown that sugar is just as addictive if not more than heroin or cocaine. And so especially at night, right before you go to bed and your serotonin levels start to drop off and your melatonin levels rise and you’re getting sleepy and all of a sudden, you crave sugars right before bed, it’s because your serotonin level, which is a feel-good hormone, drops off and sugar actually will elevate that feel-good hormone. So it’s just your body’s way of saying, “I wanna feel good. I really just need something that will make me feel good.” And that’s why people actually will make large purchases on infomercials right before bed. Because their serotonin levels dropped off and they wanna feel good so, you know, buying stuff, actually, it’s retail therapy. So people buy stuff right before bed.
That’s kind of funny. I guess that’s why Tony Robbins got all big, right? All these vacuum infomercials and knives and blenders and stuff, right? So, that’s the third thing you wanna think about. And then also, from an emotional standpoint, if there are some unsolved emotional things going on, then, of course, you’re gonna turn to food. That makes sense, right? Sugar foods like breads and candies like Maria’s struggling with. So you really want to address that.
